Evolution of IBGSOSA

The pioneer students of the school, Ilora Baptist Grammar School, graduated in 1967. The first attempt to establish the Old Students’ Association was made in 1971. The few old students who could gather, held the inaugural meeting at the Chapel of Trinity in April 1971. At that meeting, the first set of executives of Ilora Baptist Grammar School Old Students’ Association (IBGSOSA) were elected. Mr. Demola Wojuola was elected as the President and Mr. Demola Ogunrombi as the Secretary. Chief J. I Popoola, the Foundation Principal who served as Principal for 9 years (1963 to 1972) was a major encourager for the establishment of the Old Students Association. Unfortunately, the association went to sleep because of the stigma that resulted based on the composition of the association. Many other members felt they were yet to make a mark in life hence they were not ready to join.

The second attempt was in 1979 when Mr Yomi Ige was elected President and Mr. Samuel Adegbola as General Secretary. The National Executive came up with the First Constitution of the Association which was ratified at the 1979 Annual General Meeting. There after, the Association opened a current account with the then Bank of Credit and Commerce, Ilora. In those days, communication was not as easy as it is today. It was very difficult to take off on a solid ground. Notwithstanding the numerous challenges, the EXCO succeeded in creating awareness among old students for support and growth of the Association. In this regard, the Home Branch at Ilora, the Ibadan Branch, the Lagos Branch and the then University of Ife branch were the precursor branches. Chief S. I. Ojelabi, who was Principal for about 4 years cumulatively (Jan. 73 to Aug. 73 and Sep. 76 to Dec 79) also gave words of encouragement for the stabilization of the Old Students Association. The association survived for many years and ran out of steam.

Amidst the struggles to give strength to the association, the school under the principalship of Mr. J O. Obanisola and the active branches of the Old Students’ Association, celebrated 25th year (Silver Jubilee) anniversary in 1988 under the presidency of Mr. Yomi Ige. During this occasion, the first foundation stone of the School Fence Project was laid by the former Akibio of Ilora, Chief O. Olawore. Due to paucity of fund and inability to sustain the architectural structure of the association, the fence project did not go beyond foundation laying. The association went to sleep shortly after the anniversary.

In 1993, a third attempt was made to resuscitate the association but the scheduled election of National Executive could not hold. Consequent upon the low turnout and obvious inability to form a quorum, a caretaker committee headed by Mr. Yisau Adesina was nominated. The caretaker committee took over in 1993 but due to numerous logistic problems, the committee could not do much and the Association became dormant again.

2010 -2015

The Rebirth and Resuscitation of Ilora Baptist Grammar School Old Students’ Association, IBGSOSA started in 2010 when Deacon Sola Oparinde (an old student) became the principal of the school.  The first physical challenge he had was the dilapidated state of the buildings (infrastructure) and then, the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the School.

To help in disseminating information to old students both in Nigeria and in diaspora, a Facebook page, ILOGRAMOSA/IBGSOSA was created by Dr. Peter Kofo’ Aarinola (an old student).

With this awareness, many Old Students Started visiting the school to assess the condition, and for solidarity supports with the School Principal who initially moved the idea of bringing the Old Students together again as a unified body in order to play significant role in restoring the school and her glory.

Many of such earliest callers to the school were the following who came from various locations worldwide:

  • From Lagos – Dr. Obalolu Ojo, Mr. Isaac Orolugbagbe. Ms. Bimbo Fatoki, Mr. Remi Oyekola, Barr. Bolaji Johnson Olaegbe and Mr. Kunle Oyekanmi.
  • From Ibadan – Mr. Ayoade Fajinmi, Mrs. Foluke Oparinde, Mrs. Rebeca Ladipo, Mrs. Kofo Egberinde Kuyinu, Engr. Sunday L. Popoola, Mr. Remi Aboyade, Mr. Isiaka Gbolagade Salawu and Mr. Yemi Ogunwande.
  • From Ilora & Oyo Axis – Dn. Kayode Ajayi, Mr. Sanya Adeyemo, Dr. Ebenezer Tunde Olayinka, Mr. Sunday Amusan, Mr. Remi Olaniyan, Mrs. Salewa Adewole, Mr. Titi Olayowola, Mr. Tajudeen Oyetunde Salami, Mr. Kehinde Sanda, Mr. Femi Egberinde, Mr. Sunday Olayiwola, Elder Olusola Oguntope, Rev. Gbenga Mosebolatan, Mr. Yemi Okunlola, Mr. Olaitan A. Okunlola, Mrs. Grace Modupe Oparinde, Mr. Supo Akinrinola, Mrs. Titi Akintujoye, Dcn. Tunji Majaro, Mr. Oladele Akinrinola, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olawuwo and others.
  • From United Kingdom – Mrs. Abosede Kako-Are, Rev. & Mrs. Stephen Adewole.
  • From China – Ambassador Olusola Onadipe
  • From North America – Dr. Peter Kofo’ Aarinola, Elder Francis Adeseun Adefi, Mrs. Adefunke Adefi, Mr. Bayo Lanlokun, Mr. Bayo Ogundare, Mrs. Tundun Ojeniy Akande and Rev. Michael Ojewale.
  • From Ogbomoso – Rev. Ademola Adegbola.
  • From 1973 Set – Mr. Tayo Idowu (SP, & Chairman 1973), Mr. Olumide Onadipe, Engr. Funso Alayande, Rev. Adebayo Adewale, Mr. Tayo Olanipekun, Mrs. Remi Fatoki-Sanni, etc

From 2010, significant changes started occurring in the school through the Old Students even though the National Association was dormant. Classroom furniture was largely provided by the old students (Lagos Branch provided 50 pairs of double seat desks and benches; N/America Branch 55 pairs; Ibadan Branch 15 pairs and Home Branch 20 pairs of the same type). Other stakeholders also contributed by donating classroom furniture of the same type (PTA -112 pairs; State Government/MOE- 30 pairs).

In 2012, as the 50th anniversary of the school was approaching, the Principal of the School, Deacon Sola Oparinde (an old student) and some other stake holders beckoned on Mr. Yomi Ige who was the President during the 25th Anniversary, to join hands with the school in planning for the anniversary celebration. It became necessary for him to assume the role of President for the purpose of the anniversary and thereafter, until the association could be resuscitated.

Deacon Oparinde then started sensitizing the old students towards the 50th anniversary as a means of attracting attention to the poor state of the school. This paid off as it aroused a lot of interest culminating in the historic visit to the school by some old students. Four representatives of the Lagos branch namely Dr Obalolu Ojo (the chairmen of Lagos Branch), Mr Isaac Orolugbagbe (the secretary) Ms Bimbo Fatoki and Mr Kunle Oyekanmi visited the school to access its preparedness for the anniversary. The team was shocked at the poor state of the facilities and felt that the anniversary was not worth celebrating with the buildings in that state of disrepair. The Branch then undertook to renovate Block 1, the administrative building while Block 2 was renovated by the Anniversary project Committee with fund realized from Members’ donations and Contributions. This however marked the beginning of infrastructural redevelopment in the school.

Three General Meetings were held on 7th April, 18th August and 17th November 2012 in preparation for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary. Four different committees were constituted to plan the anniversary namely, Central Coordination, Fund Raising, Projects and Planning/Organizing committees.

Golden Jubilee Anniversary: January 2013:

The school successfully celebrated her 50th Anniversary in January 2013. The renovation of Block 2 was completed on Monday January 14, 2013 while Block 1 renovation (solely financed by IBGSOSA Lagos Branch) was completed on Monday January 21, 2013. Both Blocks were commissioned on the Golden Jubilee Ceremony Day (Saturday January 26, 2013)

Blocks 1 and 2 were however renamed Chief J. I. Popoola and Dn. S. I. Ojelabi blocks respectively in honour of the first two Principals of the School. The Akibio of Iloraland, HRM Oba Stephen Oparinde 11 (an old student) was in attendance.

Some past Principals of the School, who were honored at the event included Chief J. I Popoola and Chief S. I. Ojelabi, both of blessed memory

Dignitaries in attendance included some of the pioneer students that graduated in 1967 such as Late Apostle Alex Bamigbola, Mrs. Mubo Obasa and Mr. Amos Fehintola. In attendance also were 2nd set members (1968) such as Mr. Demola Ogunronbi and Mr. Kehinde Aneyo.  In his address, the President, Mr. Yomi Ige charged Old Students to ignite and adopt the spirit of Barewa College Old Students Association.

After the 50th anniversary, Block 4 (the school Laboratory block) was fully renovated in May, 2013. This was initiated and coordinated by Dn. Sola Oparinde, the Principal with funds raised during the anniversary.

After the memorable Golden Jubilee Celebration of the school, many Branches and Class Sets embarked on several other projects in the school such as:

  • Teachers/Students’ Annual Appreciation programme sponsored by Lagos Branch which maiden event held on Friday, 27th June, 2014. This event was to encourage teachers to give the best of their knowledge and time to the students and also to stimulate learning interest of students. The event was sustained for six consecutive years.
  • On 25th July 2014, Library furniture was donated to the School by the IBGS 1976 set. The donation consisted of 30 cushion chairs and 3 long reading (double face) tables, each table has 10 compartment spaces.  The furniture therefore could accommodate 30 students/readers at a time.
  • On 20th September 2014, a donation of 50 pairs of school uniform to 50 students (25 boys and 25 girls) was made by an Old Student, Mrs. Gbemisola Fasakin-Owolabi of 1988 set. She also donated a set of Yoruba Textbooks for JSS classes (1-3).
  • The North America Branch provided a big Generator 10-15 KVA Elepaq Model, and a Digital Photocopying Machine (Richoh Aficio 1018 Model) for the School on 17th September, 2015.

During the 2nd edition of the Annual Teachers/Students Appreciation programme held on Thursday, 28th May 2015, the Principal informed that he would be retiring in 2017 and there is an urgent need to reconstitute an Executive Council for the National Old Students’ Association in order to keep the Association active, strong and virile. After the Appreciation programme in the school, a reception was held at the Residence of Mr. Remi Oyekola (Lagos) behind the school compound. It was during this reception that the Lagos Branch Chairman, Dr. Obalolu Ojo raised an opinion that led to the setting up of a committee that would handle the procedure for the reconstitution of New Executive officers for the Association before the end of the year 2015. The committee was christened “The Revitalization Committee”.

The Revitalization Committee comprised the following members:

  • Mr Yomi Ige – Chairman (from Lagos)

The Principal, as the contact man, immediately notified all members about the assignment given to them as most of them were not present at the meeting. In addition, Ibadan Branch Chairman was asked to provide a meeting venue for the newly constituted Revitalization Committee.

The Committee meeting was held on the 17th July, 2015 at Hill Top Tervan, Ibadan and the following were the highlights of the meeting;

  • The Revitalization Committee looked at the Draft copy of the Constitution as prepared by Barrister Bolaji Johnson Olaegbe (Lagos) and decided to let the incoming Executive council/committee (Exco) work on it and present a final copy for approval at the Annual General meeting of the Old Students’ Association.

EXCO and AGM approved the three Pillars of the Association viz

1) Revised Constitution,

2) The Vision and Mission Statements

3) The Objectives, Programme and Key Projects.

Vision:

ILOGRAMS: A high profile model secondary school in Nigeria with up-to-date facilities and extra-curricular infrastructure preparing future leaders with the active support of a virile old students’ association

IBGSOSA: A union of old students excelling together and taking responsibility for the growth of ILOGRAMS through sponsorship, scholarships, mentorship, advocacy and project funding and execution

Mission Statements:

To:

  1. Connect, gather and interact with every old student of the school, at individual and group levels (class-sets, branches), to facilitate participation in programs aimed at improving ILOGRAMS’ pursuit of academic excellence
  2. Build a strong and virile alumni association, funded by members and which meets periodically to review progress of members and ILOGRAMS
  3. Collectively and individually implement developmental projects, funded by members and friends of the school,
  4. Be a strong voice of advocacy for the school with stakeholders such as Governments, Regulators, Nigerian Baptist Convention and the Ilora Community in order to protect the overall interests of the school, students, teachers and the alumni community
  5. Mentor students and to periodically recognize and appreciate scholarly/career efforts and achievements for motivational purposes.
  6. Provide scholarships for deserving students of the school on an on-going basis

Website: Our website (www.ibgsosa.com) was created on 28th September 2016. It became dormant in 2017 but was reactivated in April 2022.

At the February 2018 AGM, the President was re-elected for a second term of two years with the following members of the executives

A major challenge that confronted the school was the encroachment on the school land and the unfettered access from all directions in and out of the school. The fence project therefore became a focal point for the executive. On 28th July 2018, the President, in the presence of the then Principal, Mrs. Titi Akintujoye, and Mr. Isaac Orolugbgbe, Dn. Kayode Ajayi, Dn. Sola Oparinde, Prof Ebenezer Olayinka and others, laid the foundation stone of the fence and gate house.

In 2018, the Board of Trustees transferred a sum of N65,000 to the school account for the purpose of promoting sports in the school.

The Academic Performance Improvement Committee (APIC) was set up in March 2018 with a view to finding ways of improving the academic performance of the students in both internal and external examinations. The committee was made up of the following members;

  1. Rebecca Ladipo- Chairperson
  2. Isaac Orolugbagbe,
  3. Kofo Kuyinu

The school recorded a significant image boost through the selection of Miss Morounkeji Adeola Babatunde, an SS2 student for the Pan African Leadership Program in USA. As an ambassador of the school, she left Nigeria in August 2018 and returned four weeks after. For the rest of her course in the school, she enjoyed the scholarship of Mr. Isaac Orolugbagbe (an Old Student) who also paid for her tutorials in preparation for SSCE, JAMB & POST UTME.

In the same vein, Mrs. Titi Akintujoye (Principal and also an old student) sponsored Folorunso Taiwo and Folorunso Kehinde for tutorials in preparation for SSCE, JAMB and POST UTME.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Stephen Oparinde, the Akibio of Iloraland provided sponsorship to Folorunso Taiwo through his University Education while another old student who wished to remain anonymous promised to sponsor Folorunso Kehinde through his University Education.

In November 2019 the Akibio of Iloraland, HRM, Oba Stephen Oyeniyi Oparinde II, employed a Teacher of English Language and another Teacher of Mathematics for the School in order to improve the students’ academic performance in these two core-subjects.

Other Contributions of APIC members: As leaders who led by example, APIC members made personal donations of cash and materials for the encouragement of teachers and students. They purchased marking guides for years 2014 to 2018 in ten subjects. APIC also employed Chemistry teacher for the school.

All these and similar efforts led to academic improvements such that the school scored 100% in the BECE/JSS3 examination that year with several distinctions in more than seven out of the ten subjects.

APIC also initiated discussion with Ministry of Education on how to resuscitate boarding house in the school.

Mr. Isaac Orolugbagbe family and Friends announced scholarships to any identified boy and girl through APIC. Upon approval of APIC, a sum of N25,000 per annum would be given to a boy and a girl in JSS1, JSS2, SS1 and SS2. The award is to provide financial support to the recipients as they proceed into the next class

There is no doubt that in the past 8 years (2016 to 2024) the association has been put on a firm foundation under the presidencies of Mr. Ronald Olusola Olawale (2016 – 2020) and Otunba Olumide Onadipe (2020 – 2024). This solid foundation was due to the advances in technology in areas of communication and social media. It has become easier to reach a larger number of members through the social media and online meetings.
