History of the School

Ilora Baptist Grammar School (IBGS) Ilora was founded on January 25, 1963 by the Ilora community which in turn registered it under the proprietorship of the Nigerian Baptist Convention and operated it through a Board of Governors.

The foundation members of the Board of Governors were:

A new School Governing Board (SGB) was reconstituted on January 31, 2022 with the following as members:

  • Rev’d Dr. Samuel Olakunle Eyitayo – Chairman
  • Omonike Oyemomilara Adio – Secretary
  • Sanya Adeyemo – PTA Representative
  • Professor Ebenezer Olayinka – Non-Partisan Community Rep.
  • Salami – LIE
  • Deacon Kayode Ajayi – Local Government Rep
  • Deacon Oyesola J. Oparinde –           Representative of Old Student
  • Remi Oyekola –           Philanthropist
  • Master Oladipo –           Student Representative

The school opened with thirty students (16 boys and 14 girls) and two teachers (the Principal, Mr. J. I. Popoola and his wife, Mrs. G. E. Popoola). The third pioneer member of staff was Mr. J. S. Okunlola, who was House Master, Boys’ Scout Leader and Clerk, all at the same time in the formative years of the school.  The permanent site of the school, situated on elevation in the eastern part of Ilora, on a land space of 86.93 acres was occupied on April 21, 1963, beginning with one block of four classrooms decently constructed. The pioneer students occupied one room, teachers occupied one, while the others were used as library and school chapel.

The boys were accommodated in a small rented building across the school while the girls were housed in another rented building across the principal’s rented quarters further away from the school. Between 1963 and 1967, this set produced 4 different Senior Prefects over the 5 years and their names are as follows;

1963 – Mr. Taorid Shokunbi

1964 – Mr. Taorid Shokunbi

1965 – Mr Titilayo Abodunrin

1966 – Professor Peter Awotunde (Amao)

1967 – Mr. Adeseun Adefi

The school later built a temporary wooden block as staff room for teachers to create space for students in the classroom previously occupied by teachers. The wooden block also became a classroom in subsequent years until it was demolished.

Other buildings were added such as the second block of four classrooms, the science laboratory, the multi-purpose block, comprising of three classrooms, one library and the administrative offices. Additional buildings were the Power House, Dining Hall, the Chapel of Trinity, Girls’ Dormitory, Principal’s house and so on.

The school held her first Inter-house sports event on Tuesday 22nd March, 1966, under the chairmanship of HRH Oba Daniel A. Oparinde, the Akibio of Ilora.

The school was accredited by the West African Examination Council, WAEC and approved for the registration of her students for West African School Certificate Examination of 1967.

Out of the pioneer 30 students, only 16 made it up to the fifth year. Others withdrew for various reasons or repeated some classes. To the Glory of God, in the WAEC exam of 1967, the school scored 100% as all the 16 candidates passed. Chief Popoola mentored the school up to 31st December 1972 and was transferred to Iseyin District Grammar School from January 1973. He also worked at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo for some years before he retired and passed on to Glory in August 1991. The Old Students Association was well represented at his burial at Okediji Baptist Church, Ilora.

Being a Christian based school, the spiritual development of the students was very important to the founding father. From inception, attendance at church service was compulsory. Every Sunday, students are matched to either First Baptist Church or Okediji Baptist Church. The Baptist Mission of Nigeria decided and constructed replica worship centers (same design and size) in its schools in Iwo, Shaki, Ire, Ilora and others. That in Ilora was christened “The Chapel of Trinity” and was commissioned by Rev’d Dr. Burcks who also gave the key note address in 1969.

Oyo State Government took over Secondary Schools in the state including this school, by edict No.14 of September 8, 1975.

In 1985, the Nigerian Baptist Convention in solving the crisis in Olivet Baptist High School decided that all existing Baptist Chapels in all Baptist Colleges be organized into full-fledged churches and clearly demarcated. Consequent upon this, The Chapel of Trinity became Trinity Baptist Church, Ilora on 3rd March, 1996 but the physical demarcation was executed in 2021.

The school has been turning out students who have been performing well in both internal and external examinations. Today, we have eminent personalities in all spheres of human endeavor. We have Architects, Professors, Bank Directors, Medical Consultants, Veterinary Doctors, First Class Obas, School Administrators, Business Executives, General Overseers, Permanent Secretaries, Honourable Members of State and Federal houses of Assembly, Senators, Ambassadors, Speakers of States Houses of Assembly.

It should be clearly understood that between the first list SGB members inaugurated in 1963 and the current list inaugurated in January 2022, there were other groups inaugurated at different times but could not be listed here.
